15 Years of Equinox - Our Story

What does it take to start an IT company? Two friends, a computer shop, and a passion for proactive care. We are proud to celebrate 15 years of business this month and grateful to all of the people, companies, and partners who have helped us reach this point. Every company has a story. This is ours.  

We started Equinox with a dream: we wanted to give our community efficient and proactive technical services that were tailored for every unique business’ needs. We’re thrilled to celebrate 15 years this month, and incredibly grateful for Utah’s insurmountable support!

Humble Beginnings

Equinox was the brainchild of two determined minds: Steve had a strong background in technology after years of working for Novell and Word Perfect in the early 90’s. Meanwhile, Norm had a background working for HP and the networking department of Connecting Point from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. The two like-minded men met at a local computer shop called Aroma (meaning Always Ready to Offer More Assistance) that they both frequented, and that’s where it all began.

From Friendship to Business

Norm and Steve started working together on small IT projects. If one needed extra manpower, insight, or additional expertise, the other was always there to lend a hand. As they worked together, Norm and Steve discussed how their skills could potentially be used to serve their community. In 1997, the two men sat at Norm’s dining room table and discussed the future. Using a 3 ft x 2.5 ft easel and a pen, some of the essential foundations of Equinox were born. Norm and Steve discussed the importance of not only “fighting fires”, or dealing with problems as they came up, but providing the essential preventative and proactive care to stop technical problems from even happening in the first place. After all, better safe than sorry, right? Their big chance came when one of Norm’s acquaintances was desperate for help on a large project later that year. A call center was about to lose a multi-million dollar contract due to several major IT engineering and implementation flaws, and needed a complete technical overhaul to stay in business. Steve and Norm rolled up their sleeves, pulled together a group of 10 friends and family and began the huge project. The overhaul was a success! When Steve and Norm received their first paycheck, they created and registered a company (in one day!) and deposited it.

Growing Rapidly

Norm and Steve’s business grew rapidly. In 2002, the Equinox team began the pivotal change from a mix of part-time college employees doing mostly break-fix repair into a full-fledged and full-time proactive team of network engineers and support technicians. In 2005, the company’s name officially changed to Equinox IT Services. Since then, we have focused on serving Utah with responsive managed support and custom advanced projects. We’ve continued to add more proactive tools and helpful expertise; we’ve made great strides in Linux, Citrix, cloud, remote, virtualization and backup services, just to name a few! We owe our sincerest thanks to Utah and the wonderful businesses that support us every day! Here’s to the next 15 amazing years!
